IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System, which is a standardized test designed to measure the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The IELTS exam assesses four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It is recognized by universities, colleges, employers, and governments around the world as proof of English language proficiency.

The IELTS exam is available in two formats: Academic and General Training. The Academic IELTS is used for admission to universities and higher education programs, while the General Training IELTS is used for immigration purposes and employment opportunities. The exam is scored on a 9-band scale, with a score of 9 being the highest level of proficiency.
